How to Create and Use Express Notes

Express Notes help you chart faster by storing commonly used text as reusable templates. Instead of typing the same information repeatedly, you can insert prewritten notes into a chart with a single click or by typing a short code.

 

When to Use This

Use Express Notes to quickly add frequently used charting text, such as treatment plans, diagnoses, recommendations, or other standard documentation.

 

What You Need

  • Access to your Profile settings
  • An existing chart to use Express Notes while charting
     

Permissions

  • No special permissions are required. Each user can create and manage their own Express Notes

 

Creating Express Notes 

  1. Click your name 
  2. Select Profile 

 

 

  1. Open the Express Notes tab
  2. Click +New Note Template

 

 

  1. Complete the following fields: 
    • Description: Enter a name that identifies the Express Note
    • Code: Enter a unique code (up to 8 characters). This code can be typed during charting and expanded using Ctrl + Space
    • Type: Select Rich Text to enable formatting options such as bold, font size, and lists
    • Category: Select a category, if applicable
    • Comment: Enter the text you want inserted into the chart
  2. Click Save 

 

 

Using Express Notes While Charting

You can insert an Express Note in one of two ways

 

Option 1: Select an Express Note 

  1. Open a chart 
  2. Click Express Notes 
  3. Select the desired Express Note from the list

     


 

Option 2: Use the Express Note Code

  1. Open a chart
  2. Click in a text box area 
  3. Type the Express Note Code 
  4. Hold Ctrl + Space to replace the code with the saved Express Note 

     

 

Result 

Your saved text is automatically inserted into the chart, helping you document more efficiently and consistently.

 

Troubleshooting

The code doesn't expand into the Express Note

  • Verify that the code matches the one saved in the Express Note
  • Ensure you press Ctrl + Space immediately after typing the code
  • Confirm the Express Note has been saved before attempting to use it

 

Common Questions

Can I use my colleague's Express Notes?

No. Express Notes are unique to each user profile and cannot be shared. Each user creates and manages their own Express Notes based on their individual documentation needs.
